The volume assembles the papers delivered at the International Colloquium of the Latin American Studies Center (CELA) of the University of Mainz at Germersheim in June 1997. The topics of the contributions mirror the research interests of the Spanish Studies scholars working at CELA and their guests: history of Colombia, Venezuela and the Spanish Caribbean, cultural and linguistic identity, Afro-Hispanic linguistics, modern Colombian and Venezuelan literature.
