Five nations are viewed through a theoretical lens combining Gramscian and cultural-studies views with more traditional Marxism, with only Sandinista culture being praised. While a broad, anthropological definition of culture is advanced, elite-produced and -distributed arts and letters and the mass media are the foci here. A search for changes in revolutionary cultures (e.g., the Christian Base Communities) coexists uneasily with dismissals of the also-new cultures of evangelical Christians.
